First of all, if you are using an electric water heater, the very first thing you must do – even if the repair you will be performing will be a very simple one like replacing a leaking gasket – is to make sure that the main power switch of the heater is turned off. Electric water heaters usually work with a current of 240 volts which is deadly if discharged. And no matter how much money or trouble it will save you, attempting a repair without ensuring your own safety first will not be worth it.

A similar warning should be made for gas water heaters as well; they will be connected to the main gas pipes and the gas taps should be shut off and the power to the heater must be cut before doing anything. Plus, if you happen to smell any gas during a repair attempt, you should immediately call the gas company and act with utmost care even if you completely shut off the gas taps. A single flame or simply turning on the light can cause an explosion.

Water Heater Repair: What You Should Do

If there is a problem with your water heater and you are not sure what is the cause or the solution is, your best bet would be to contact the authorized service company and have them fix the problem for you. In fact, apart from simple water heater problems we mentioned above, it would be best not to attempt to repair or even to install a water heater if you are not absolutely sure that you know what you are doing.

Even if you have some kind of experience with fixing your own stuff and water heater repair does not seem hard to you, you should remember that the service crew employed by these companies receive all that training for a reason.
